- The city of Rajkot, or the City of Princes, is a small but prominent city located in the state of Gujarat. Rajkot was formed in the year 1620 by the Jadeja Clan who ruled over the place till India’s independence in 1947. The city is a fusion of architectural and historical sites of great importance and also serves as an essential hub for the automobile industry, handicraft industry and a textile centre.
- The city is also a welcoming point for many individuals hoping to visit surrounding activities and towns. Located in the middle of Gujarat’s other two hubs, Ahmedabad and Porbandar and on the banks of the Aji River, Rajkot is also the proud holder of many titles. It is most famously known as the place where Mahatma Gandhi pursued his early education. This reason along with Rajkot being the former capital of Saurashtra manages to attract a maximum number of tourists and historians who are deeply interested in India’s past. Aside from this, Rajkot is one of the cleanest cities in India while also being the 22nd fastest growing city in the world.
- Rajkot has been under different rulers since it was founded. It has had a long history and had a significant influence in the Indian independence movement. Rajkot was home to many personalities like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Rajkot is in a transition period of growing cultural, industrial and economical activities. Rajkot is the 26th largest city of India and the 7th fastest growing urban area of the world.Rajkot was the capital of the then Saurashtra state from 15 April 1948 to 31 October 1956 before merging in bilingual Bombay State on 1 November 1956. Rajkot was merged into Gujarat State from bilingual Bombay state on 1 May 1960. Thakur Saheb Pradyumansinhji died in 1973. His son, Manoharsinhji Pradyumansinhji, who has carved out a political career at the provincial level, succeeded him. He served as a Member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly for several years and as the state Minister for Health and Finance. Monoharsinhji's son, Mandattasinh Jadeja has embarked on a business career.On 26 January 2001 the 7.7 Mw Gujarat earthquake shook Western India with a maximum Mercalli intensity of X (Extreme), leaving 13,805–20,023 dead and about 166,800 injured.
